Beast - Aviyal review

We watched Beast yesterday evening. Sadly we couldn't afford the morning tickets so we had to switch to the evening show. Since we saw all the completely negative reviews our expectations were set to 0. Here's our thoughts on Beast coming from a guy who watched with 0 expectation.

The story is pretty straight and simple. Veera Raghavan an Ex - RAW agent is stuck inside a mall which is hijacked by a group of terrorist and he plans to save the day. That's all. Nelson tells this story in his own way with some Vijay magic.

After the mall hijack the movie starts to fire up with both action sequences and comedy. Most of the jokes landed pretty well, some missed. Vijay' highlight scenes were a treat to watch with Anirudh's music. Vijay as usual did his job and steals the show. He doesn't shout that much like in the previous movies which was refreshing to watch. Nelson did a good job with Vijay's character. Other than Vijay, Sathish did a really good job in the movie. His scenes were a blast to watch. As a Nelson film it had too many characters, some good, some unnecessary. I think that almost covers all the positives in the movie.

For the negatives, Anirudh's music was not upto my expectations. After something like Master I had a really big expectation for the background score but it was meh. At parts it felt fine but mostly it was meh. After Doctor Nelson this is surely a downgrade movie. The writing was not as good as Doctor was. Even though Vijay's highlight scenes were good it felt really forced into the movie. The last 20 mins was just unnecessary.

Overall the movie is not great, but a pretty good one time watch. It is not as bad as all the reviews say. I would strongly recommend watching it once in theaters if you liked the Doctor movie.

Beast an upgrade for Vijay and a downgrade for Nelson.

Aviyal's Top 5 Movies of 2024

No, no, no, no, it is never too late to make a top 5 movies of 2024 list. I am actually angry with every Tamil movie released in 2024. I mean, for the first six months there was nothing, and all of a sudden great movies came out week after week. I was legit broke at a point. Plan better, guys.  2024 was a great year for Tamil cinema. It is true that we saw duds like G.O.A.T, but on the other hand, we got really really good movies. Let’s make a top 5 list of 2024. Before getting to the list, remember that this is one person’s opinion. If you don’t see your favorite movie on the list, it doesn’t mean it is a bad movie. I just prefer these 5 movies.  Sheesh, the amount of disclaimers we have to give in 2025. Kannism ruined everything. Anyway, here’s the list: 5. Lubber Panthu Lubber Panthu came out of the syllabus. No one knew about this movie. It randomly came out one day and became one of the most successful movies of 2024. What I loved about Lubber Panthu is that every ...

Thoughts on Sapta Sagaradaache Ello

As someone who loves to watch the sea (trust me, I’ve even slept at midnight during the process), the very title Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, translated from Kannada as “somewhere beyond the seven seas,” intrigued me very much, which made me watch it recently, and this is a small appreciation of that beautiful piece of work. It’s been a few years since I saw an organic romance like this. Manu and Priya are not just your regular protagonist lovebirds; instead, they lit up the screen with their dreams and hopes for their better future. A series of ups and downs with destiny playing its role through not one but two cunning men crushes all the things they ever wanted, and side A ends in the way no one expects it to be. Side B, on the other hand, focuses on multiple things like lost love, new hope, rekindling romance, and a revenge arc where everything was dealt with near perfection. There is a scene where Manu cuts a big flex board so Priya can have more sunlight in her house, throwing back to...

Aviyal's Thoughts on Kanguva

Here is our review with some ignorable spoilers. There is a scene where a boy cries looking at something. Another adult character comes near him and sees the boy is looking at a mother bird feeding her hatchlings, which reminds him of his dead mother. Understanding this, the adult also starts crying. If you are done cringing, let’s analyse the movie a little. The title card copied the same as Vijay in Goat but zero impact with terrible music. Cinematography is the worst at places. For example, in the same scene, when they show different characters in separate frames, the color of the forest changes. Edit cuts are terrible, as sometimes it seems like what the heck are we watching. They said the movie is made on a huge budget, and Surya is not a big hero who eats up half of the budget as salary, but still, CGI is at worst even in a scene where they toss a wine bottle. And about the crocodile scene, it was poorly shot and worked. They could’ve cut it off as it was just a filler....
