Aviyal's Top 5 Movies of 2024

No, no, no, no, it is never too late to make a top 5 movies of 2024 list. I am actually angry with every Tamil movie released in 2024. I mean, for the first six months there was nothing, and all of a sudden great movies came out week after week. I was legit broke at a point. Plan better, guys.

2024 was a great year for Tamil cinema. It is true that we saw duds like G.O.A.T, but on the other hand, we got really really good movies.

Let’s make a top 5 list of 2024. Before getting to the list, remember that this is one person’s opinion. If you don’t see your favorite movie on the list, it doesn’t mean it is a bad movie. I just prefer these 5 movies.

Sheesh, the amount of disclaimers we have to give in 2025. Kannism ruined everything. Anyway, here’s the list:

5. Lubber Panthu

Lubber Panthu came out of the syllabus. No one knew about this movie. It randomly came out one day and became one of the most successful movies of 2024.

What I loved about Lubber Panthu is that every moment was created organically. Nothing felt forced. And every character had their space to shine. Aishwarya Rajinikanth should learn a thing or two from Tamilarasan Patchamuthu, but even then, she can’t save that abomination.

4. Vaazhai

Vaazhai was something special. This movie did something to me. You know I wouldn’t last a day if I was in Sivanaindan’s shoes. I never had to struggle like him, and I never want to. Yet, something in that world made me want to be Sivanaindan, at least for a day.

Vaazhai’s writing was exceptional, especially in the last 30 minutes. It kept building up till the accident and kept us on the edge of the seat. And, after the accident, Mari made sure we couldn’t get up from our seats for another hour.

3. Lover

Wow. Just wow. A movie like Lover in a society where we celebrate toxic couples. Lover might be the best portrayal of a toxic man.

I have seen men like Arun a lot in real life. Seeing someone finally make a movie about these men and scrutinize them was relieving. I was really angry with Arun, to the point where if I had seen Manikandan, the actor who played Arun, I would have slapped him left and right.

The songs were awesome too. Sean Roldan went above and beyond. Also, the best female performance of the year. Sai Pallavi got nothing on Sri Gouri Priya.

2. Thangalaan

Pa.Ranjith might be one of the best filmmakers in India right now. His craft is top-notch and matched only by a very few.

It took me a very long time to get out of the world of Thangalaan. And I really did not want to come out of that world. It was amazing. Vikram, Pasupathi, Parvathy, and honestly, everyone performed to their best

The only letdown was the background score. Not too bad, but definitely not up to Ranjith’s standard.

1. Kottukaali

I will be honest. The only reason I made this list is to rank Kottukaali in the top spot. I would be pretty happy if someone sees the list and goes, alright I’ll check this movie out.

I knew this would be the best movie of 2024 in 2023 itself. Vinoth Raj showed what he is capable of in Koozhangal, and he showed us that Koozhangal is not a fluke with Kottukaali.

Vinoth Raj is one of the very few directors who doesn’t underestimate the audience’s intelligence. He doesn’t spoon-feed. And I love it.

Soori and Anna Ben were terrific as Pandi and Meena. Anna Ben made a huge impact without saying anything. It’s the eyes, Chico.

Not using music for this film is one of the boldest decisions one could make. Sucks that the movie was not received well. Maybe people would have loved it if it had been titled Eda Kottukaali da and promoted as a Malayalam movie.

And that’s my list. What about you? Tell us your top 5 in the comments. Would love to hear about it.

Aviyal's Thoughts on Kanguva

Here is our review with some ignorable spoilers. There is a scene where a boy cries looking at something. Another adult character comes near him and sees the boy is looking at a mother bird feeding her hatchlings, which reminds him of his dead mother. Understanding this, the adult also starts crying. If you are done cringing, let’s analyse the movie a little. The title card copied the same as Vijay in Goat but zero impact with terrible music. Cinematography is the worst at places. For example, in the same scene, when they show different characters in separate frames, the color of the forest changes. Edit cuts are terrible, as sometimes it seems like what the heck are we watching. They said the movie is made on a huge budget, and Surya is not a big hero who eats up half of the budget as salary, but still, CGI is at worst even in a scene where they toss a wine bottle. And about the crocodile scene, it was poorly shot and worked. They could’ve cut it off as it was just a filler....
