Aviyal's Thoughts on Kanguva

Here is our review with some ignorable spoilers. There is a scene where a boy cries looking at something. Another adult character comes near him and sees the boy is looking at a mother bird feeding her hatchlings, which reminds him of his dead mother. Understanding this, the adult also starts crying. If you are done cringing, let’s analyse the movie a little. The title card copied the same as Vijay in Goat but zero impact with terrible music. Cinematography is the worst at places. For example, in the same scene, when they show different characters in separate frames, the color of the forest changes. Edit cuts are terrible, as sometimes it seems like what the heck are we watching. They said the movie is made on a huge budget, and Surya is not a big hero who eats up half of the budget as salary, but still, CGI is at worst even in a scene where they toss a wine bottle. And about the crocodile scene, it was poorly shot and worked. They could’ve cut it off as it was just a filler....

Thoughts on Devara

Mild  Spoilers Ahead! [not if you have already watched Vada Chennai] Special Taskforce Officer Danny rushes to Erra Samudram with his team to arrest smuggler Yethi, only to find out that he has been MIA for the last few months. Then they meet Sivappa, who tells them the story of Devara in the first half. In the second half, 12 years later, we are seeing the story of Vara. The rest of the story is about where Devara went and how the villain Bhaira got his revenge. At the end, we see glimpses of Kattappa putting a sword through Bahubali. Sorry! Vara stabbing Devara [I hope when they reveal the scene in the next part, Devara will not say “Amma Jakrata.”] It takes a special kind of effort to make a movie that has utterly terrible VFX with 300Cr. You can clearly see water and boats at two different layers. All the night shots, we can identify where the flashlights have been placed for lighting.  In one particular scene, the protagonist is stomping a guy’s head (wish it was t...

Thoughts on Indian 2

Oh. My. God. Indian 2 is quite frankly the most abysmal brainrot I have come across in some time. When Annatthe came out, I thought no one, I mean no one, could make a movie this bad or worse than this. Cut to 2024, Shankar proved me wrong ( It may not be as bad as Annatthe but I am biased af). The director who made Enthiran, Sivaji, and Anniyan; the actor who did Virumandi, Hey Ram, and Thevar Magan; the cinematographer who shot Ponniyin Selvan and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, and the composer who scored Master, Petta, and Thiruchitrambalam came together to make a sequel to a 30 year old superhit movie. I mean, I too would have invested in this if I had a shitton of money. Don’t worry Lyca, it’s not your fault.  What I am confused about is, how the hell Shankar convinced Kamal to do this movie. Shankar must be either good at gaslighting or he has nudes of Kamal. So, what’s the story of Indian 2? You would be amazed to know the plot. Spoilers ahead To put it in one line, four YouTubers ...

Raayan - Not a review, just a few observations

Raayan is Dhanush’s second directorial venture, and that fact is made very very obvious throughout the film. It is a very average movie in Tamil cinema, that has a few entertaining scenes and music. That is all. As an overview, nice premise. The first half was enjoyable and subtle. But then the second half wanders and drags. There are characters that seem promising in the first half that just fall flat on the second. A few things especially were very noteworthy and I want to mention them here. Firstly, how much the movie borrows from other movies, especially other Dhanush movies. ‘Dhanush in the middle of a gang-war’ should be a sub-genre in Tamil cinema by this point, and I mean it in a good way. But this movie is a very very average instalment in that genre ( This was the absolute worst, in case you are curious). The character of Dhanush, the titular ‘Raayan’ is exactly Dhanush from Asuran. He has the same personality, same look in his eyes and the same way of talking, even. A calm,...

Food - When Pure is not so Pure

Vegetarianism vs. non-vegetarianism is a long, never-ending debate, especially in India. And now veganism has joined the fight too, but let's just keep it aside for the time being. With almost 30 percent of its population being vegetarian, India is seen as one of the countries with the largest vegetarian population and the other 70 percent consumes one or other form of meat.  Being a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian is just a preference right? Then why is there so much noise every time this topic is pulled out on any platform? Because in India it is never just a dietary preference. It is always associated with sociological aspects such as caste, religion and privilege. There are a lot of studies that conclude that certain micronutrients for the body can be derived only from meat, but still, a section of people choose to be vegetarians and it is their right choose anything for their own health. Vegetarianism is fine to the point of preference but the problem comes when it becomes “pur...
