There is no way we can do two separate reviews or “thoughts on” for these movies. Not because we are lazy but because there is nothing to write about these two movies other than utter garbage. So combining these two movie thoughts to achieve a 500-word count target. But I don’t think I can write 500 words even after combining two shits together. Well, let’s try.
Thunivu
The Ajith starrer bank-heist movie directed by H.Vinoth was a complete letdown from the start. I mean, you have to put effort and work hard to make a movie this bad. Watching Thunivu made me understand that H.Vinoth is one among us. We go to work and do the bare minimum to prevent getting fired, log out and return home. Vinoth has done the same with Thunivu. I was just amazed by some scenes thinking, “How the hell did these things make it to the final cut? Did anyone actually watch the final cut before the release?”
Thunivu had a lot of characters, but nothing sticks with us, including Ajith’s character. Yes, I don’t know the name of Ajith’s character or anyone’s character. It was that forgettable.
Throughout the first half of the movie, Ajith dances and roams around the bank aimlessly. There is absolutely no plot development in the first half of the movie. The whole first half could have been trimmed up to 30 mins.
So, the second half has a story? Sadly, yes. In short, the second half was just mental torture. It just irritates you to the core. The flashback portions were dumb. Oh, the climax. Never seen a climax this bad. That boat chase was horrible.
Supporting cast of the movie did nothing, but can’t blame them. There was no scope for anyone in that movie. Ghibran did an amazing job at irritating us. Like, man did not even give a single second gap for our ears to recover. The two songs in the movie didn’t help at all. Editing was laughable too. I felt like watching a 2 hour dank meme.
Overall, very bad writing and execution from Vinoth. Hope he comes back to form in the future.
Varisu
I had zero expectations for Varisu, but still, somehow, they managed to disappoint. The first half of the movie is not for the fans or the family audience. It is for SAC. Vijay na was just talking to SAC throughout the first half of the movie. To be honest, Varisu was funny, just not in the comedy portions. Varisu had a very big cast, and no one was impressive. Vijay na was just performing his mannerisms for his fans, which was way over forced and overacted. It was not enjoyable. It was irritating at best.
The cinematography of the movie was laughable, especially in the intro scene. It was so bad. Usually, Vijay has a cool look and charisma. Vamshi somehow managed to fuck it up.
I felt like I watched an entire movie when the first half was over. All the mass elements were reserved for the second half. Maybe the second half entertained the fans, but it was just bland. Nothing special.
Miserably placed songs did not help the movie at all. When Ranjithame song started playing, I just wanted to tear down the screen.
Thaman’s music was unique. You could hear every single instrument in the background. And the music vibration comes to your seat and goes to your heart. I was vibrating like a Nokia 1100 throughout the movie.
The only plus point was Vijay dance in the first couple of song. He did a great job. But, Jani master fucked up Ranjithame song.
Overall, a very bad, frustrating movie. I Hope Vamshi never returns to Tamil cinema.
When Prakash Raj said “adi mela, adi mela adi mela, adi vulunthukite irukum”, I felt like he was talking to me personally. Morning Thunivu adi, night Varisu adi. A very bad start to the year. Let’s hope we don’t get any more adi.
Overall, Pongal directed by Robert B. Weide.
